Program Description

Veterinary Assistant
This 40 hour course allows students to develop knowledge and skills required for an entry-level position in animal care. The lecture and clinical time will be offered over a 16 week period.

Course topics include:

  • Immunization and protocols
  • Basic restraint
  • Pharmacology
  • Euthanasia
  • Parasitology
  • Dentistry
  • Radiology
  • Laboratory Procedures
  • Nursing care
  • Nutrition
  • Introduction to Large Animals

During this 8-week course students will learn how to assist the Veterinarian in caring for horses, cattle and other large domestic animals. Topics covered include anatomy and physiology, agribusiness, and animal husbandry. Students will learn basic restraints, vaccination protocols, parasitology, hoof care, and dentistry.

Veterinary Assisting for Exotic Pets
This 16-hour course uses lecture, demonstration and field trips to focus on the care of exotic pets for students who are interested in working exotics in the animal care field. Students will gain knowledge about the special dietary, housing, environmental, and nursing requirements. Topics include anatomy and physiology, illness and disease manifestation, safe handling, restraints, patient evaluation and owner education.

Snake, Lizard, Caged Bird, Aquarium Fish, Turtle, Hamster, Guinea Pig, Rabbit, Ferret, Mouse
Rat, Chinchilla, Gerbil, Tarantula
