Comments:

June Stankiewicz Decker joined the mathematics department at Three Rivers Community College in 2002, attained the rank of full professor, and retired in 2021. She chose to be an educator because education is a transformative and empowering experience for all involved. She found it especially rewarding to be part of a community college whose mission is to provide educational opportunities for all.

Professor Decker earned her B.A. cum laude in Philosophy and Psychology and Social Relations from Harvard (Radcliffe) College, her M.S. in Mathematics from UCONN, and her CT professional teaching certification in Mathematics from Central Connecticut State University.

Professor Decker would like to thank her mentor Professor Emerita Kathy Gundersen who taught her to think in terms of learning communities, and to work across disciplines and departments to make good things happen for the whole college such as the Learning Across the Board seminars and workshops. From Professor Gundersen, Professor Decker learned how to create student-centered, high-engagement lessons and how to teach math online as early as 2003.

One of Professor Decker’s proudest accomplishments was collaborating with Math Educators from across the state to write the model Algebra 1 and Algebra 2 Core Curriculum for the Connecticut State Department of Education. The complete lessons that she helped co-author are available on the CT State Department of Education Website for the free use by all students, parents, and educators.

Professor Decker would like to thank all the wonderful colleagues and students that made for such a gratifying 19-year career at Three Rivers.
