The Chinese President called for the reconstruction of the Gaza Strip to be carried out under the principle of “Palestinians govern Palestine” and called on the international community to promote a “comprehensive and lasting ceasefire”.
Xi Jinping stated that the Palestinian issue “affects international equity and justice” and constitutes “a test of the effectiveness of the global governance system”, said the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
In a message sent to a UN meeting on Tuesday, the Chinese leader argued that the international community must “take responsibility, correct historical injustices and defend justice”.
On the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, Xi stressed that any post-war structure must respect “the will of the Palestinian people” and take into account the legitimate concerns of countries in the region.
The Chinese leader insisted that efforts must “be anchored in the two-state solution” to achieve a “comprehensive, fair and lasting” political agreement.
The Chinese President said that the immediate priority is to improve the humanitarian situation and alleviate the suffering of civilians in Gaza, and reiterated that Beijing, as a permanent member of the Security Council, “will continue to support the just cause of the Palestinian people to restore their legitimate national rights”.
The message comes just days after the Security Council approved a resolution, based on a plan by United States President Donald Trump, which establishes an international security force for Gaza by 2027.
China abstained from the vote, stating that the text “is vague” in fundamental aspects and does not sufficiently reflect Palestinian sovereignty, criticisms also shared by Russia.
Beijing has insisted, in recent weeks, that any post-war agreement must avoid formulas of external tutelage and be reinforced by a political process that gives protagonism to the Palestinians.
Chinese spokesman Fu Cong warned at the Security Council that, in the approved approach, “Palestine is barely visible” and the proposed governance mechanisms lack clarity.
