Deconstructing Chinese Opera: Learning Chinese Culture from Chinese Opera

March 6, 2018 @ 2:45 pm - 4:10 pm

A Rare Opportunity to Learn All About Chinese Opera.

If you are curious about the Chinese opera, you should not miss this workshop/presentation which is very rarely offered in Connecticut. Feel Free to bring your class to the presentation.

Ms. Barbara Chan, the Chinese Language and Tai Chi instructor at Three Rivers, was nurtured in a Chinese opera-influenced family in Hong Kong. She performed her first Cantonese opera-singing in female vocal at age nine, and since then performed numerous times as well as the international radio station The Voice of America. She made her debut in opera-acting in New York Chinatown in 2011. In 2012 she proved her performing skills by playing a role which required her to sing and act in both the male and female roles. Because of this rare versatility, Barbara is often sought after by other actors and actresses as their acting parents. This workshop will end with a demo designed specially to showcase the different operatic footwork and the extraordinarily long “water sleeves”. These are traditional operatic skills very rarely performed together because of the complexity involved.
