The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, was admitted to Hospital de São João, in Porto, after feeling unwell.
An abdominal CT scan was carried out, and DN found out that he was diagnosed with an incarcerated hernia, so the clinical team decided that the President of the Republic will have to undergo surgery this evening, as it is an “urgent surgery”, according to an official official at the Hospital de São João.
Speaking to the press, the director of Hospital de São João stated that the President of the Republic was, at 10pm, “entering the block” and that it was expected that he would be hospitalized “in the next few days”:
The operation, according to the same source, “has a relatively low risk”, so “it is expected to go well, without complications”.
Preside has a previous history of this type of surgery, having undergone surgery for an umbilical hernia — which was also incarcerated — in December 2018, at Curry Cabral Hospital.
The President was “in a good mood, lucid and cooperative” before joining the block, the administrator of Hospital de São João assured journalists, who also added that the operation will last an hour and a half.
“Digestion arrest” was the first diagnosis
Initially, an official source from the Presidency of the Republic only reported that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa had suffered a “digestion arrest” when returning from Amarante, where he went to the funeral ceremonies of businessman António Mota.
According to a note published on the website of the Presidency of the RepublicMarcelo Rebelo de Sousa’s doctors understood that, before the return trip to Lisbon, it would be better to carry out medical examinations, which are being carried out at the moment.
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa headed to the North, in order to participate in the funeral of the former president of Mota-Engil, who died this Sunday, aged 71. He went to the Church of São Gonçalo, in Amarante, where mass was held by António Mota, at 3 pm, from where the businessman’s remains were sent to the family tomb, in the Amarante cemetery.
In the morning, the President of the Republic, who is 11 days away from celebrating his 77th birthday, was at Praça dos Restauradores, in Lisbon, at the ceremonies commemorating the 1st of Decemberpromoted by the Historical Society of the Independence of Portugal and the Lisbon City Council.
The Presidency of the Republic will provide more information when the results of these tests are available.
