The European Commission announced this Thursday, 4, a formal investigation to assess whether the new policy of technological ‘giant’ Meta, of restricted access for artificial intelligence suppliers to the WhatsApp conversation platform, violates European Union competition rules.

“The European Commission has opened a formal investigation into anti-competitive practices to assess whether Meta’s new policy on AI vendor access [inteligência artificial] to WhatsApp may violate EU competition rules”, the institution announces in a statement.

At issue is a new Meta policy, announced in October this year, which prevents suppliers (such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT) from using a tool that allows companies to communicate with customers through WhatsApp (the WhatsApp Business Solution), when AI is the main service offered, Brussels fearing that such an initiative will restrict competition in the community space.
