Moments of some tension marked the end of the protest demonstration, in front of the Assembly of the Republic, when some protesters began to throw bottles onto the steps of Parliament. Others, some with their faces covered, lit small fires, burning banners and posters. Between chants and slogans, these actions generated some concern among the police forces who, on a day of general strike, monitored the entire country, but without developing into more serious incidents. There were around 200 people responsible, says an official PSP source to DN.
According to the police, the general strike had so far proceeded “calmly”, registering only five significant incidents during the night and morning — cases quickly resolved. In Porto, around 200 strikers blocked Rua Central de Francos at 00:43 this morning, a situation that ended irrelevantly at 02:00, in an attempt to prevent STCP vehicles from leaving. During the early hours of the morning, there were still small pockets of tension in parts of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area: in Loures, on Nacional 10, next to the entrance to the Bus Station, a picket tried to prevent heavy vehicles from leaving; A similar situation was recorded in Musgueira, involving Carris vehicles and, in this case, requiring the creation of a police cordon. In Alverca, a group of strikers tried to prevent workers from entering a supermarket.
In Lisbon, at 9 am, an unannounced demonstration at the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences at Universidade Nova was also controlled.
And on the eve of the strike, at 10:30 pm, an incident was also recorded at the Bosch factory, with an attempt to obstruct entrances and exits.
Despite these episodes, at the beginning of the night, the PSP reinforces the “little relevance” of the incidents recorded, guaranteeing however that the police are still monitoring the country, especially downtown Lisbon.
