Zelensky opens for the first time to withdrawing his troops from Ukrainian-controlled Donetsk and creating a demilitarized zone

Volodymyr Zelensky is moving to make an end to the war with Russia possible and get closer to a peace agreement. The Ukrainian president has expressed his willingness to withdraw his troops from areas of the Donetsk region still under kyiv’s control and turn them into a demilitarized zone.

After weeks of intense diplomatic negotiations with the US Administration, Zelensky now seems open to giving in on one of his red lines: territorial disputes. However, according to The New York Timesthe offer is conditional on Vladimir Putin ordering the withdrawal of his Army from an equivalent strip of territory in Donetsk that Moscow has captured by force.

The proposal is part of the latest draft of the 20-point peace plan, drawn up by Ukraine and the United States in recent weeks and which Zelensky presented to the press in kyiv on Tuesday. The document states that kyiv will receive security guarantees similar to Article 5 of NATO and that its Armed Forces may be made up of up to 800,000 soldiers.
