Ed Bambas’s son, Michael, shared that his father will finally be able to retire and enjoy the life he long postponed, thanks to nearly $1.5 million raised after his emotional story went viral, reported New York Post. The life-changing amount will be presented to the 88-year-old in a surprise ceremony at his workplace on Friday. Michael said his father – who has no idea about the full extent of the donations still pouring in – has been deeply touched and overwhelmed by the kindness shown to him after he spoke openly about his financial struggles in the widely shared video.
VIRAL VIDEO RAISES NEARLY $1.5 MILLION
Ed’s story resonated globally after Australian influencer Samuel Wiedenhofer met him at a Meijer grocery store in Brighton, where the 88-year-old was working full-time to survive. Ed explained that he had lost his pension and his wife, whose extensive medical bills left him financially devastated.
Moved by his situation, Wiedenhofer shared the encounter online and launched a GoFundMe on Monday, which surpassed $1.443 million by Wednesday night, reported New York Post.
HOW GENERAL MOTORS BANKRUPTCY CHANGED ED BAMBAS’ LIFE?
Ed revealed he had retired from General Motors in 1999, but the company’s 2012 bankruptcy erased his pension. Once living comfortably with his wife of more than 50 years, her severe illness eventually forced him to sell his home and belongings just to get by.
“The thing that hurt me the most was when my wife was really sick and when they took the pension, they also took the healthcare coverage and all but $10,000 of my life insurance,” Ed said in the video, while holding back tears.
According to the New York Post, after the death of his wife, Joan, who passed away seven years ago, Ed had no choice but to return to a demanding 40-hour workweek. He eventually secured a position at the Meijer supermarket located about 45 miles west of Detroit, where he has been working for the past five years.
