The High Representative for Foreign Affairs insisted today on the approval of the proposal to use immobilized Russian resources to finance Ukraine, warning that “Putin is counting on the failure” of the European Union (EU).

“Moving forward with this legislative proposal means that we will all support it […], [Vladimir] Putin [Presidente russo] he is counting on our failure today, we shouldn’t give him that”, said Kaja Kallas, at the entrance to a European Council meeting, the last one in 2025.

The political representatives of the 27 EU countries in the European Council will discuss this Thursday, the 18th, a proposal presented two weeks ago by the European Commission to use Russian resources frozen in the territory of the community bloc to finance Ukraine in 2026 and 2027, which does not yet have approval guaranteed.

Belgium is the EU country with the most assets of this type and Kaja Kallas said she understands that “it is being pressured by several European countries and also by the United States of America”, but warned that the ‘weight’ of the decision will be borne by the 27: “That is why the proposal is European.”

“Unity is our strength and we need a solution today,” he insisted.
