The Peruvian candidate suffered this Tuesday several shots while he was inside your vehicle. Las three bulletswhich have hit the window of his car, have caused nothing more than scratches from the glass that has been thrown. Unharmed, he is now at the police station to file the corresponding complaint.
Belaunde was the victim of the shooting while driving through the Cerro Azul districtin Cañete, as reported by the former president of the Council of Ministers, Pedro Cateriano. Precisely, Cerro Azul is where he has a business and when he was about to go there he was intercepted by gunfire.
“He is complying with legal procedures before the Police. He is unharmed. The criminals have not achieved their objective,” explained the former prime minister.
The incident occurred around 10:50 in the morning (local time) and at the moment, the details of how the attack occurred are unknown.

“It is a bad start to the campaign. I think that Peruvians know what violence is. We are unfortunately going through a context of active criminal activitybut we must firmly reject this attack that Rafael Belaunde suffered with bullets in the morning,” said Cateriano.
“The election must be a moment of exchange of views and solutions to the crisis. In no way can the use of violence be allowed, no matter where it comes from,” he stated.
In the wake of the attack, Cateriano urged authorities to redouble the security of candidates who will participate in the 2026 General Elections.
Businessman, consultant and politician
The Peruvian candidate is a businessman, consultant and politician —and grandson of former Peruvian president Fernando Belaunde—. He was Minister of Energy and Mines of Peru during the government of Martín Vizcarra, from July 15 to August 6, 2020.
Additionally, he is founder and president of Popular Liberty political partysince November 14, 2022. In recent presidential candidate polls he has only obtained single-digit results. However, it is still early to determine winners, as Peru’s general elections are scheduled to be held on April 12, 2026.
