How will the new package of changes to labor laws in Portugal affect the Brazilian community and other immigrants? This is the topic of a debate tonight, December 3rd, in Lisbon. The event will be at Casa Sindical, starting at 7pm, with free entry.
The meeting will be broadcast live for those who cannot participate in person, especially people who live outside the capital. Registration is required through from this link. For those who participate in person, a gathering will be held after the discussions, with a non-obligatory request to bring a dish or drink to share among everyone.
The session will also debate “the importance of the general strike”, scheduled for December 11th. The strike will mobilize the two largest unions in the country, as well as several other organizations that represent the most diverse categories of professionals.

This is the case of doctors, nurses, commercial professionals, school teachers, workers in various roles at airports and professionals from municipal authorities (city halls). The participation of the Federation of Public Administration Unions (FESAP) is also confirmed, which will paralyze or affect services such as Finance, Social Security and the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA).
This will be the biggest general strike since 2013, when Portugal’s two largest unions, the General Confederation of Workers (CGTP) and the General Union of Workers (UGT) carried out a joint strike. The strike promises to literally bring Portugal to a halt.
Among the main measures of this new labor package proposed by the Government is the facilitation of dismissing workers and the increase in the maximum duration of fixed-term contracts, from the current two to three years, in the case of fixed-term contracts, and from four to five years, in the case of uncertain-term contracts. Another proposal is for an individual time bank, a modality that was extinguished in 2019 under the former socialist government. The unions’ claim is that it could be a way to avoid paying overtime.
