It’s official. Formula 1 will return to Portugal in 2027 and 2028 at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão, it was announced this Tuesday, December 16th.
“Formula 1 announced today that it will return to Portugal in 2027 and 2028, within the scope of a two-year agreement with the Portuguese government, Turismo de Portugal, and the promoter Parkalgar, Parques Tecnológicas e Desportivos, SA”, said, in a statement, the promoter of the queen race of motor sport.
The last time the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve hosted F1 races was in 2020 and 2021, during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Now the 2027 and 2028 races will be the 19th and 20th editions of the Formula 1 Portuguese Grand Prix.
“Situated in the idyllic Algarve, known for its spectacular beaches and historic charm, the 4.6 km circuit offers riders a technical challenge, with drastic elevation changes that culminate in a steep descent until the last right turn that leads back to the pit straight”, reads the site da F1.
The Government has already welcomed the return of competition to the asphalt of the Portimão circuit. “Portugal is back on the Formula 1 map. The Portuguese Grand Prix will have a direct impact on economic activity, generating opportunities across the entire economic chain – from tourism to commerce, from services to SMEs – projecting the country as a competitive and reliable destination”, highlighted the Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion, Manuel Castro Almeida, cited not communicated.
