The Christmas operation by the PSP and GNR recorded 15 fatalities and 1,444 injuries, of which 89 were seriously injured, following 4,847 road accidents that occurred between 18 and 26 December.

In the interim balance of Operation Safe Parties 2025-2026 – Natal Phase, the PSP recorded 1,421 accidents (47 fewer than in 2024), with three fatalities (one less than last year), 447 injuries (18 fewer), of which 21 serious (two fewer) and 426 minor (16 fewer than in 2024), says a statement.

The accidents with fatalities relate to a crash that occurred on the 18th in the municipality of Abrantes, in Santarém, a crash on the 23rd in the municipality of Aveiro, and a third crash on the 24th in the municipality of Amadora, district of Lisbon.

The GNR, in turn, reported in a statement the existence, in the same period, of 3,426 accidents (193 fewer than in the same period in 2024), which resulted in 12 fatalities (three fewer), 68 serious injuries (12 fewer) and 929 minor injuries (232 fewer).

The fatalities resulted from accidents that occurred in the districts of Aveiro (two), Beja (one), Braga (one), Leiria (two), Lisbon (two), Porto (two) and Santarém (two).

Six of the 12 dead were victims of crashes, four due to collisions and two due to being run over.

Together, the PSP and GNR inspected 78,666 vehicles and drivers in person (23,653 fewer than in 2024) and controlled 624,363 vehicles by radar, resulting in a total of 13,235 infractions, of which 1,891 were for speeding, 1,641 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 772 for driving under the influence of alcohol.

In the same period, 39 individuals were detained by the PSP for crimes against property (theft and robbery) and 41 for drug trafficking, with 45,500 individual doses seized.

That security force also seized 19 firearms, 58 bladed weapons, 437 ammunition and 38 weapons of other types, having detained 10 people for possession of a prohibited weapon. 15,099 pyrotechnic items were also seized.

The PSP today began the New Year Phase of Operation Safe Parties, which will last until January 4, 2026.
