Ukrainian authorities announced this Tuesday, December 23, power cuts in several regions of the country, following Russian attacks with missiles and drones against various infrastructures.
The bombings prompted the Polish army to send planes to protect the country’s airspace.
“Russia is once again attacking our energy infrastructure. As a result, emergency power cuts were triggered in several regions of Ukraine”, announced the Ukrainian Ministry of Energy on the Telegram messaging network.
Electric operator Ukrenergo reported a “massive missile and drone attack” and announced that repair work will begin as soon as safety conditions permit.
On Monday night, local authorities in Odessa (south) stated that a Russian drone attack damaged port infrastructure and a civilian ship. Russian attacks have intensified in recent weeks in the strategic Black Sea region.
Almost four years after launching a large-scale offensive against the neighboring country, Russia attacks Ukraine practically every night, targeting energy infrastructure in particular, especially in winter.
The new power cuts come at a time when Ukraine is facing temperatures close to zero or even negative in much of the territory.
At around 06:30 GMT, the entire Ukrainian territory was under air alert, according to the authorities’ online map.
Throughout the night, the Ukrainian army warned of repeated threats from drones and cruise missiles in several regions of the country, including in the west, far from the battlefront.
The Polish army announced this morning via the social network
The procedure is triggered regularly when bombings target western areas close to the Polish border.
The new bombings take place the day after the death of a Russian general, Fanil Sarvarov, killed in Moscow as a result of his car exploding, in what was the third presumed murder of a high-ranking Russian military officer in just over a year.
Kiev did not immediately comment on the general’s assassination.
