It’s a pattern that repeats every December, leaving travelers scrambling as they weigh their options for visiting family during one of the busiest travel periods of the year, as per a report by USA Today.

Why do holiday fares spike so sharply?
According to Melanie Fish, VP of Public Relations at Expedia Group, the explanation isn’t complicated. “The holiday season is one of the busiest travel periods of the year. High demand combined with limited capacity means prices climb quickly as departure dates approach,” she told USA Today in an email. Booking early is usually the key to finding a deal, and 2025 has been no exception. But Fish noted that even now, there are still pockets of savings. “While holiday airfare tends to rise due to peak demand, travelers can still find incredible savings – especially on international routes. We’re seeing flights to destinations like the Bahamas, Aruba and Cancun for under $500,” she said, as per a report by USA Today.

Which days offer the best holiday deals?
At this point in the season, travelers may find it tough to land a bargain for Christmas. Historically, the cheapest flights are on Dec. 24, averaging about $40 less than other holiday dates. For New Year’s, fares tend to dip on Dec. 30 and 31, with flights often running $100 lower than the seasonal average.

When does airfare finally drop after Christmas?
For many deal-hunters, the real relief comes once the holiday rush clears, as per a report by USA Today. Fish said, “Based on Expedia data, fares start to dip toward the end of January, with the most noticeable drops around January 19, 22, and 23. This is an ideal window to fly for flexible travelers to score savings.” If you can wait until the crowds thin out, winter travel becomes much easier on your wallet.
