The mayor of Pombal, Pedro Pimpão, is the name chosen to lead the PSD’s candidacy for the presidency of the National Association of Portuguese Municipalities (ANMP), confirmed the DN with a social democratic source.

The election of Pedro Pimpão, current president of the Social Democratic Mayors, will take place at the ANMP congress, scheduled for December 13th and 14th, in Viana do Castelo. If he is elected as expected, since the PSD has the largest number of council presidencies, he will succeed the socialist Luísa Salgueiro, mayor of Matosinhos.

In the municipal elections on October 12th, the Social Democrats won 136 municipalities against the PS’s 128. This gives the PSD the opportunity to regain leadership of the ANMP, which had been in the hands of the PS since 2013.

At 45 years old, Pedro Pimpão is serving his second term as head of Pombal City Council and is currently a member of the ANMP Board of Directors and vice-president of the Intermunicipal Community of the Leiria Region.

When he assumes his role as president of ANMP, Pedro Pimpão already knows that, contrary to what has happened since 2022, the municipality of Porto will join the association. The return to this body was one of the aims of the candidacy of the current mayor and former Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Pedro Duarte.
