The Administration of the Port of Aveiro (APA, SA) awarded the contract for the construction of the new Intermodal Terminal, next to the bundle of railway lines, in the Logistics and Industrial Activities (ZALI) zone, the port administration informed today.
The work represents an investment of 15.9 million euros, co-financed by the European Union, and will have an execution period of 480 days, with the consignment notice being signed on the 24th with the company ABB – Alexandre Barbosa Borges, SA, following an international public tender.
“This is a strategic investment for the Port of Aveiro, which will increase the efficiency of its offer of rail services through the port and, consequently, expand its area of influence to the region of Castile and León and Madrid”, highlights that entity in a press release.
The new platform “will allow us to affirm the position of the Port of Aveiro in global logistics chains, reinforce the competitiveness of the industrial fabric of its area of influence and consolidate its role as a reference infrastructure in the multimodal transport of goods”.
With a total area of 10 hectares, the future terminal will include two railway lines prepared to operate trains up to 750 meters.
The new terminal will have cargo parking areas, an administrative and operational services building, container washing and inspection areas, as well as parking for light and heavy vehicles.
“The construction of this dual-use Intermodal Terminal is co-financed by European funds through the CEF II – Connecting Europe Facility program, in the Transport – Military Mobility measure, with a contribution rate of 47.3% of the total value of the investment”.
The port administration hopes that the investment in the new terminal “will contribute to the economic growth of the Central Region and the country, in addition to promoting a more environmentally sustainable transport system”.
