The new Board of Directors (CA) of Metropolitano de Lisboa will take office on January 1, 2026, with the Government appointing Cristina Vaz Tomé as president, according to a resolution published today in the Diário da República.
The appointment of the new CA of the Metro was decided in the Council of Ministers on December 11th, with the members of the Government responsible for the areas of Finance and Infrastructure, choosing the former Secretary of State for Health Management to lead the Metropolitano de Lisboa.
On October 30, the Government had already approved, also in the Council of Ministers, the creation of the vice-president of the Lisbon Metro Board, which at the time had as president, on a replacement basis, Maria Helena Campos, following the death of Vítor Santos, in June 2024.
After the death of Vítor dos Santos, the member of the Board of Directors Maria Helena Campos began to exercise “the powers inherent to the position of president of the Board of Directors, replacing the incumbent”.
Cristina Alexandra Rodrigues da Cruz Vaz Tomé has now been appointed president of the Lisbon Metro Board for the term corresponding to the three-year period 2026-2028.
Bruno Manuel Curto Marques was appointed vice-president, while Mahomed Ashif Mohamad Bashir and Sónia Alexandra Martins Easter assume the positions of members of the CA.
Sónia Easter maintains the position she already had.
According to the Diário da República, appointments take into account “professional suitability, experience and competence to perform the positions” and in accordance with the CVs of the members chosen by the Government.
The resolution of the Council of Ministers published today in Diário da República also authorizes Cristina Vaz Tomé, Pedro Naves Folgado and Mahomed Ashif Mohamad Bashir “to carry out teaching activities in public higher education establishments or institutions of public interest”.
The diploma that changed the composition of the CA of Metropolitano de Lisboa, with the introduction of the role of vice-president, but maintaining the same number of members of the body, was published in Diário da República on November 25th.
Thus, the Lisbon Metro CA is now “composed of a president, a vice-president and three members, appointed by resolution of the Council of Ministers, on the proposal of the members of the Government responsible for the areas of finance and transport”.
According to the diploma, the change is justified by “the current growth and development of the Lisbon Metropolitan, EPE (ML, EPE), as well as mobility in the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML), with the implementation of the circular line, the extension of the Red Line, the construction of the Violet Line, the extension of the Metro Sul do Tejo”.
The previous CA of the metro, appointed for the 2022-2024 three-year period, had appointed Vítor Santos to the position of president and Maria Helena Campos and João Paulo Saraiva to the position of members.
According to the State Budget proposal for 2026, the Government plans to invest 30 million euros in the Lisbon Metro fleet, after having reserved 45 million in the previous OE and this amount having ended, according to the report presented, as it amounts to 53 million euros.
The Government refers to the investment allocated to projects to expand the Lisbon Metropolitan network, on the Red (São Sebastião II — Alcântara) and Odivelas — Loures (surface metro) lines, and Metro do Porto, on the Casa da Música — Santo Ovídio lines, light metro and complementary works, and in the extension of the Rosa, Trofa and Gondomar lines.
In the case of Metropolitano de Lisboa, the OE2026 proposal indicates the acquisition of rolling stock as part of the project to purchase 24 triple train units.
The Lisbon Metropolitan operates daily with four lines: Yellow (Rato-Odivelas), Green (Telheiras-Cais do Sodré), Blue (Reboleira-Santa Apolónia) and Red (Airport-São Sebastião).
