A man died, this Thursday, December 4, in the sea on the beach of Porto da Areia Sul, in Peniche, according to a statement from the National Maritime Authority in a statement.
The alert that “a man had fallen into the water” was given at 2:45 pm to the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center, with the Lifeguard Station, the Maritime Police, the Peniche Volunteer Firefighters and the National Institute of Medical Emergency (INEM) immediately activated.
Before emergency services arrived at the scene, a person who was there jumped into the sea to rescue the man, something he was unable to do, according to the National Maritime Authority (AMN).
The man, aged around 80, was taken unconscious by one of the Maritime Police and transported to the beach. The Peniche and INEM firefighters then carried out resuscitation maneuvers, but “it was not possible to reverse the situation”.
Death was declared at the scene, and the body was transported to the Instituto de Medicina Legal de Torres Vedras.
The Maritime Police are now investigating the causes of death.
