Journalists from Lusa, Portugal’s most important news agency, chose the conviction of former president Jair Bolsonaro for an attempted coup d’état as “the Lusophony event of 2025”.

Since 2016, the agency has presented, always at the end of the year, a kind of retrospective in which journalists vote and choose notable events and figures in Portugal, in Portuguese-speaking countries – that is, in Portuguese-speaking countries – and internationally.

In this edition, behind Bolsonaro’s condemnation, in second place was the milestone of the 50th anniversary of the independence of four Portuguese-speaking African countries and Timor-Leste. Thirdly, another Brazilian fact: the recent police operation in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, which left more than 130 people dead.

The “Lusophone personality of the year” chosen by journalists was the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres.

The Lusa agency’s ranking of facts and personalities of the year included the votes of 114 journalists. Nas other categories are: the election of Immigrants as “personality of the year” in Portugal and the April blackout as the “event of the year” in the country.

From the outside, the people of Palestine were elected as an “international personality” and the war in Gaza as the “international event” of 2025.
