The Lisbon City Council approved this Wednesday, December 17th, the municipal budget for 2026, which foresees an expenditure of 1,345 million euros, a proposal from the PSD/CDS-PP/IL leadership made possible with the support of Chega, with the remaining opposition voting against.
In a private meeting, Lisbon’s municipal budget proposal for 2026, presented by the PSD/CDS-PP/IL leadership, which governs without an absolute majority – with eight elected among the 17 members that make up the municipal executive -, was made viable with 10 votes in favor, including the two Chega councilors.
There were seven votes against from the remaining opposition, which corresponds to all councilors from left-wing political parties, namely four from PS, one from Livre, one from BE and one from PCP, an official source from the municipality told Lusa.
After being approved by the chamber, the proposal must be voted on by the Lisbon Municipal Assembly, a vote that is scheduled for January 13th.
As part of the presentation of the proposal, the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas (PSD), defended that the budget for 2026 is “balanced, responsible and innovative”, highlighting as a priority the investment in the city, with 410 million euros (ME), to intervene “in the areas that matter most to Lisbon residents”, namely housing, urban hygiene, security, green spaces and street paving.
Before revealing the vote, the Chega council told Lusa that the budget proposal has “positive aspects”, including the improvement of urban licensing processes, “which are in line with Chega’s policies”.
