Former Brisbane Broncos star Josh McGuire is set to appear in a Brisbane court later this month after being charged with alleged strangulation and assault offences against a five-year-old child, reported 9News. The 35-year-old, who also played for the North Queensland Cowboys, St George Illawarra Dragons, Queensland, and Australia, was arrested by Queensland Police on Tuesday.

According to news.com.au, Queensland Police confirmed that a 35-year-old man from Brighton has been charged with one count each of choking/strangulation and common assault against a child. McGuire was arrested after an investigation by the Queensland Police Gateway Child Protection and Investigation Unit. McGuire is due to appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on December 17.

Over a 14-season NRL career, he played 259 games, including 197 for the Broncos, represented Queensland in 14 State of Origin matches, and played Test football for Australia and Samoa.
McGuire played seven games for England’s Warrington, which ended after he received a 12-game suspension for using inappropriate language on the field. According to Love Rugby League, after returning to Australia, McGuire took a coaching role with the Broncos, but that position ended earlier this year. He is believed to have been working in marketing since then.

McGuire, who played eight games for Australia, was part of the 2017 Kangaroos squad that won the Rugby League World Cup prior to his brief Super League stint.
