The President of the Republic stated this Thursday, December 18, that the Public Ministry’s decision to shelve the preventive investigation into the Prime Minister’s family company “is justice working”, declining to comment on this case.

In the Cidadela de Cascais, in the district of Lisbon, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also refused to comment on the statements made by the head of the PSD/CDS-PP Government, Luís Montenegro, about the actions of the Public Ministry: “You already know that I don’t comment on the words of either the Prime Minister, ministers or party leaders. By nature, I never comment.”

Regarding the archiving decision released on Wednesday, the head of state stated that “justice works, it works on its own” and in this case “it was a decision by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, it made the decision, it has the competence to make it, it has been made”.

Asked if the shelving of an investigation involving the prime minister is good news for the country, he replied: “I’m not going to qualify. I’m just saying that democracy needs strong justice. A strong justice is a justice that must, as I have said several times, be as fast as possible, but the speed depends on many factors, in terms of investigation and in terms of the functioning of the courts”.

“And so, what happened here was that, after I don’t know how many months, there was a decision, that decision put an end to a certain process under specific conditions. It happened, it happened. If you want, it’s justice working,” he added.
