THIS is the terrifying moment a plane nosedives into a river and smashes into pieces, injuring the pilot and passenger.

Witnesses on the Rio Negro, near the village of Paricatuba, in Brazil, watched in horror as the plane plunged into the water.

The pilot and passenger of the aircraft suffered injuries all over their bodies after the horror accident on Sunday.

Footage was captured by witness, , Fernando Araújo, who was on a jet ski when he noticed the aircraft flying worryingly close to the waterlocal media reports.

He said the plane performed two landings on the river before the crash.

But after the second contact, the plane continued to fly low as if it was preparing for a third landing.

When the plane suddenly hit the water, the architect was the first on the scene.

On approach he noticed there were two men on board.

The aircraft commander appeared to be in a state of shock, he said, while the younger crew member called for help.

Other witnesses rushed to rescue the two men from the water.

A fire engine, a rescue unit, and five firefighters were dispatched to the scene, the Amazonas Military Fire Department (CBMAM) said.

The pilot and passenger suffered injuries all over their bodies and received initial treatment at the scene.

As of the last update, they had not been officially identified.

After inspection, no immediate risks were identified on site, and the area was left secure.

This comes just days after a separate horror plane crash in Brazil claimed the life of a pilot.

The plane was towing an advertising banner across the sky at in Rio de Janeiro when the accident occurred in front of thousands of sunbathers on the famous Copacabana Beach.

In a shocking twist, it was the pilot’s first day on the job and it was his birthday days earlier.

He was later identified as Luiz Ricardo Leite de Amorim, originally from Goiânia.

Firefighters rushed to the scene with jet skis, boats, divers and aerial support to try save him but unfortunately it took more than two hours to recover the body.

He was the sole occupant of the single-engine plane, and he had just celebrated his 40th birthday on December 23.

Risk management expert Gerardo Portela told local media it was clear the aircraft suffered some kind of malfunction.

The aircraft was operated by Visual Propaganda Aérea, which authorities say did not have authorisation for the advertising campaign.
