FIVE children are among nine dead in a mass stabbing after a knifeman storms neighbours’ homes.

Officers were called to an address in Paramaribo, Suriname on Saturday night after reports a man stormed several homes and stabbed nine people to death.

It is understood four of the attacker’s children were among the victims.

“I wish all the bereaved much strength, resilience, and comfort in this unimaginably difficult time,” President Jennifer Geerlings-Simons said on Facebook.

Another adult and child were also taken to hospital after sustaining serious injuries in the attack.

Police shot the male suspect in the leg before detaining him.

He was also taken to hospital and is under police guard.

The attack took place in Richelieu in the Commewijne district about 15 miles east of the capital city of Paramaribo.

Neighbours said the attack began after the suspect, a 43-year-old male, had an argument over the phone with his wife, with whom he no longer lived.

The suspect’s wife said she would not pick up the children, but would instead send someone else for them, it has been reported.

The suspect the allegedly attacked his kids with a knife and also went after neighbours in their homes, witnesses reported to local media.

Suriname is a former Dutch colony and traditionally has one of the lowest murder rates in South America.

In 2024, the rate spiked to 30 homicides per 100,000 residents.

The small independent nation has just 600,000 people.
