The first of the 22 new trains ordered from the Swiss manufacturer Stadler, which aim to reinforce CP’s regional service, has already arrived in Portugal. Confirmation was given by the Ministry of Infrastructure, which highlights that this is “a decisive step towards the modernization and sustainability of the CP fleet and, consequently, towards increasing supply”. This first unit is expected to enter service in the second half of 2026.

At issue is the order, placed in 2020, of more than two dozen railcars from Stadler, of the Flirt model: 12 dual-mode railcars (with electric and diesel traction) and 10 electric railcars.

The investment, supported by Sustainable 2030 and the Environmental Fund, totals 158 million euros.

“The arrival of this first unit represents a new stage in the life of CP and for decarbonized public transport in Portugal. A company undergoing renovation, with a long way to go and which today gains new tools to serve its passengers”, says the Minister of Infrastructure in a statement.

The office led by Miguel Pinto Luz guarantees that the new trains will be “fundamental to reinforce services such as regional ones, where adherence to the Green Rail Pass was reflected in an increase in demand of more than 100%” and recalls that this is just the first unit of “a set of large investments that translates into around 200 new trains for CP”.

The objective, explains the Ministry, will be to increase the number of passengers transported by the company, which, this year, should reach the 200 million mark.
