Businessman Elon Musk has unleashed a new political storm in Europe after openly demanding the abolition of the European Union and the return of full sovereignty to the Member States, in a message published this Saturday on their social network X.
His words have received back immediately from the vice president of the Russian Security Council and former president of the country, Dmitri Medvédevwho laconically responded “exactly” to the magnate’s proposal.
Musk published his message just days later that the European Commission imposes a fine on X minimum of 120 million for violating transparency rules and obligations of the Digital Services Regulation, a sanction that the businessman described as “insane” and “crazy.”
In this context, he stated that “the EU should be abolished and the sovereignty returned to individual countriesso that governments can better represent their people”, accompanying their message with the slogan “AbolishTheEU”.

The owner of Musk even accused the EU of interfering in the 2024 US elections and of having “a history of going against him”, after the files opened for alleged breaches of the Digital Services Act (DSA).
He endorsement of Dmitri Medvedev The idea of abolishing the EU is part of a Russian discourse that for years has presented the European bloc as a hostile and decadent actor.
The leader, close to the Kremlin, has frequently used his interventions on networks to amplify messages critical of European institutions, in full tension due to the war in Ukraine and the sanctions against Moscow.
Von der Leyen’s video
In his most recent offensive, Musk also released a video of a public event held in Finland in August, in which the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyenpraised “democracy” and freedom of expression in the community bloc while a pro-Palestine protester was subdued by the police.
In the images, Von der Leyen maintains that critics “must be happy to live in a free country like Finland“, comparing the situation with Moscow, where the arrest would be almost immediate, while the activist’s detention occurs in front of the public, a scene that Musk commented with a smiling and perplexed face emoji.
The businessman’s statements come at a time when the relations between the EU and the government of Donald Trump they go through a delicate phasemarked by trade disputes and the clash over technological regulation.
From Washington, members of the administration have denounced the European fines against large American companies such as “attacks” against technology of his country, while in Brussels the role of the bloc as a global regulatory power against the digital giants is vindicated.
