Denmark announced this Monday, December 22, that it will recall the United States ambassador after President Donald Trump appointed a North American “special envoy” to Greenland, considering the decision “totally unacceptable”.
Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen told Danish broadcaster TV2 today that he is outraged by the appointment, which he considered “totally unacceptable”, adding that the United States ambassador to Denmark will be summoned in the coming days for explanations.
The minister asked the United States to respect the territorial integrity of his country, referring directly to the appointment of the governor of the North American state of Louisiana, Jeff Landry, to the position designated as “special envoy” for Greenland.
In the past, Jeff Landry argued that the autonomous Danish territory of Greenland should be part of the United States (USA).
Since the beginning of the year, the United States has expressed interest in acquiring Danish territory, citing concerns about North American security.
Washington’s positions on the issue have generated criticism from both the Danish government and the autonomous government of Greenland.
“Jeff understands how essential Greenland is to our (US) national security and will vehemently defend our country’s interests for the security and survival of our allies and, in fact, the world. Congratulations, Jeff!”, said US President Donald Trump on Sunday, through a message spread on social media.
