ECONOMYNEXT – Cyclone Ditwah has killed 123 people and 130 are missing the Indian Ocean Island’s Disaster Management Centre said, as low lying areas near the coast are under flood alert as water flow down rivers.
Telephone contact with some of the hardest hit hill country towns including Gampola, in the Kandy district, and some towns are out of telephone contact for days.
The highest reported death toll so far of 51 is from the Kandy district. The missing is 67.
In the Western province, flood water is the Colombo and Gampaha districts are still rising and many have been already evacuated.
Ja-Ela and Gampaha towns are under water and water level in Negambo can rise further as water level in Deduru Oya continues to rise, officials said.
“The flood situation in the island is continuing. Just because rains have stopped, floods will not reduce downriver,” Sakura Dilthara, Engineer Department of Irrigation said early Saturday speaking to Sri Lanka’s Sirasa Television.
In the Western province, Gampaha town has been flooded and patients have been shifted.
