ECONOMYNEXT – A flood alert has been issued for low lying areas of Malabe, Athurigiriya and Battaramulla by the Colombo District Secretary, Prasanna Ginige, said, as water level in the Kelani River continues to rise.
Kaduwela, Athurigya-Malabe, along Malabe to Battalamulla residents in low areas are advised to evacuate immediately.
Malabe Ardarsha Vidayalaya (model school), and Pittugala Yashodara Maha Vidyalaya are ready to accommodate evacuees.
Water is flowing over the Ambatale flood control bund, Ginige said.
“Move out as instructed and safeguard your lives,” Ginige said in a broadcast message. “If not authorities will have to rescue you later.”
Water levels in the canal along Chandrika Kumaratunga Mawatha which is connected to the Ambatale area is rising, an EconomyNext reporter said.
Water is flowing down the Kelani River from upper reaches in Hatton, Ginigathena and Kithulgala towards Colombo.

The Irrigation Department has also issued a critical flood alert for lower catchment areas of Mahaweli River as water from Kandy and Gampola areas flow down.
Water in Dimbulagala, Thamankaduwa, Welikanda, Lankapura, Medirigiriya, Seruwila, Kanthale,
Kinniya, and Muttur Divisional Secretariat divisions will rise to a Critical flood level, the Department said.
