Google has started offering one of the most requested features ever by Gmail users: the ability to change your primary email address without having to create a new account. The update, which is being implemented in phases, aims to solve the problem of millions of users who still use addresses created years ago and which no longer reflect their professional or personal identity.
Until now, anyone who wanted to change their @gmail.com username was forced to initiate a lengthy data migration process or use complex redirection tools. With this new tool, the process becomes native and integrated into the Google ecosystem.
The “alias” system: What happens to the old email?
The great innovation lies in the way Google manages the transition. When choosing a new address, your original name is not deleted. Instead, it is automatically converted into a “alias” (pseudonym).
In practice, this means that any message sent to the old address will continue to be delivered to your current inbox. Additionally, all associated services — such as Google Drive, YouTube subscriptions and Google Photos history — remain unchanged and linked to the same account, eliminating the risk of file loss.
Rules and limitations: one year waiting period after moving
To prevent this functionality from being exploited for illicit purposes, such as phishing or sending spamGoogle has established a set of strict rules:
There is a chronological limit: It is only allowed to change the email address once every 12 months. After confirming the change, the user is prevented from making any further changes for one year.
Maximum Change Ceiling: Google has imposed a lifetime limit on three changes per account. This means that after the third change, the address will be permanently fixed.
Identity Security: Company support documents released by the international press reveal concerns about identity risks. Although the old email remains as an “alias”, Google warns that in certain third-party services and calendar invitations the old name may still be visible, requiring caution in managing the digital footprint.
What is the availability?
The feature is being rolled out gradually. Each user can check whether they already have it available by accessing the settings of the Google Accountin the Personal Information. If the “Google Account Email” option allows editing, it will now be possible to change the name.
