This Thursday, November 27th, Portugal became the World Under-17 Football Champion. A goal from Anísio Cabral helped the Portuguese team beat Austria (1-0) in the final of the World Cup held in Doha, Qatar.
Since 1991, 34 years ago, therefore, the Portuguese have not celebrated a world conquest. This is the third world champion title won by a Portuguese team, after the triumphs in the under-20 world cups, in 1989, in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and 1991, in Lisbon, both from the so-called Golden Generation of Portuguese football and under the guidance of Carlos Queiroz.
Current European champions, the Portuguese team had already secured the best participation ever in the competition, surpassing third place in 1989.then played at under-16 level, with current coach Bino Maçães on the team. After that third place, in Scotland, and being eliminated in the quarter-finals in 1995, in Ecuador, and in 2003, in Finland, Portugal reached the final and won the trophy, becoming the 11th world champion team at under-17 level, succeeding Germany, champion in 2023, in a list dominated by Nigeria with five titles (1985, 1993, 2007, 2013 and 2015).
