Banco Português de Fomento (BPF) announced this Thursday, 4th, its participation in the financing of two large-scale projects that, together, represent almost one billion euros of investment: the new Eastern Lisbon Hospital (HLO) and the AtlasEdge Data Centers Campus, in Carnaxide.
In HLO’s total investment of 455 million euros, BPF contributes 15 million in financing, in an operation syndicated by Banco Santander in partnership with the European Investment Bank and commercial banks.
The operation, described by the bank as the first of project finance carried out directly by its balance sheet, it aims to support the consolidation of six hospital units currently dispersed into a single complex, with the aim of improving efficiency, organization of services and the responsiveness of the health system in the Lisbon region.
At the same time, the BPF granted 25 million to the consortium that finances the AtlasEdge Data Center Campus, a project that aims to reinforce the national digital infrastructure and position Portugal as a strategic connectivity hub.
This line integrates a Sustainability Linked Loanlinking financing to environmental performance and energy efficiency targets.
AtlasEdge includes Portugal in an investment plan of more than 500 million in the coming years.
Regarding operations, Luís Guimarães, Chief Commercial and International Officer of BPF, states, cited in a statement, that “BPF’s participation in these operations reinforces its determining role as a Sovereign Bank and investment driving agent, supporting and helping to make structuring and transformative projects viable for the regions and the country”.
According to the bank, this financing aims to increase Portugal’s competitiveness and resilience, by strengthening essential infrastructure for economic growth, technological innovation and the provision of healthcare.
