Let’s move away from the film for a bit to talk about something that seems to have nothing to do with it, but we’ll be right back. Until December 21, 2025, the play is on display at São Luiz, in Lisbon. I promise myself Modernby director Alice Azevedo, which is based on the book Frankensteinby Mary Shelley. And it shouldn’t be difficult. I will not politicize the topic, I will not criticize those who think they know more about trans people than they do about themselves, embarking on speeches that limit their right to be. I prefer to make known the genius of art queerif we can talk about art queer. It is art like any true expression. Maybe there is only art.
Let’s return to The Outrun. Part of the film’s soundtrack, the one that is serene and brings Rona closer to redemption, was performed by Malin Lewis, a trans artist who has raised the standards of traditional music practices in the United Kingdom to an unprecedented level. Malin Lewis, in addition to being a violinist, builds and plays Scottish bagpipes. Concerning smallpipeswhich are less intense bagpipes than the better-known Scottish bagpipes – the great highland bagpipes or Big Pipe -, Malin Lewis created a pointer (melodic tube) that allows you to play more notes than were traditionally supported by the instrument. Basically, this allows us to meet the musical innovation that Malin Lewis embraced and lent to the universe of The Outrunso marked by music. The serenity of Malin Lewis’ music, which carries with it an entire aesthetic inspired by ancestral European traditions and his own experience as an artist queeris also the result of a philosophical process, which culminated in his first album, entitled Halocline. In Portuguese, halocline designates the visible difference between layers of water with different salinities.
Like Amy Liptrot, who was born in Orkney, Malin Lewis also comes from a Scottish island universe, but from the Isle of Skye, where the myth of selkie also coexists with the population. A seal that, at specific moments, leaves its skin behind and emerges from the sea as a person, to reach other people. However, legend has it, if the selkie If they do not return to the sea within a specific period, they are trapped in human form forever.
