Former CNN anchor Don Lemon was arrested by the FBI on Thursday night in Los Angeles accused of violating federal law in the context of protests against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the state of Minnesota.

This was communicated by his lawyer through a statement, in which he detailed that the journalist, with 30 years of professional experience, was reporting on what was happening inside a church in the city of Saint Paul on January 18. A court had rejected an arrest warrant requested against Lemon last week for his connection to an anti-ICE demonstration.

The protesters interrupted a mass at the temple, where an immigration police agent is a pastor, and chanted “ICE Out!” The Trump Administration later attempted to charge eight people over the incident, including Lemon, invoking a law that protects those who attempt to participate in a religious service at a place of worship.

Although the judge shelved the request to arrest the journalist, who was in Los Angeles to cover the Grammy Awards gala, the FBI has proceeded to arrest him.

“Instead of investigating the federal agents who murdered two peaceful protesters in Minnesota, Trump’s Department of Justice dedicates its time, attention and resources to this arrest when it is actually the one who acted unlawfully,” said the presenter’s representative, denouncing an “unprecedented attack on the First Amendment.”
