Twelve people died and 453 were arrested for driving with blood alcohol levels considered a crime in the first eight days of the Christmas and New Year operations of the GNR and PSP, the corporations announced this Friday, December 26th.

In a statement, the PSP says that it arrested 258 people for road crimes, namely 174 for driving while drunk and 84 for driving without a license. 35 people were arrested for crimes against property (theft and robbery) and 36 suspected of drug trafficking, with 45,413 individual doses seized.

In your area of ​​responsibility, the PSP recorded 1,329 accidents, resulting in three deaths and 408 injuries (20 serious and 388 minor).

Between the 18th and 25th of December, in operation Festas em Segurança 2025-2026 – Natal Phase, the PSP inspected 10,087 drivers and 35,387 vehicles on the roads using radar, having detected 2,808 infractions to road legislation, of which 367 were due to driving at excessive speed.

It also detected 270 infractions for lack of mandatory periodic inspection, 127 for lack of mandatory civil liability insurance, 73 for driving under the influence of alcohol, 45 for improper use of a cell phone while driving and 26 for lack of or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child seats.

The PSP also says that, during this period, it seized 19 firearms, 55 bladed weapons, 435 ammunition and 37 other weapons, either as a precautionary measure or following the eight arrests made for possession of a prohibited weapon. 6,676 pyrotechnic items were also seized.

Since the beginning of the operation, within the scope of air border control inspection actions, the PSP has detained 15 people for illegally staying in national territory, controlled 309,698 foreign citizens and prepared 17 reports and 21 reports for administrative offenses, within the scope of the foreigners’ law.

It also intercepted 522 people, refusing entry into national territory to 16 and notifying three of them to voluntarily leave.

The GNR, in the first eight days of the Christmas and New Year 2025/2026 operation, recorded 1,844 accidents, resulting in nine fatalities, 41 serious injuries and 455 minor injuries..

According to data released today, between December 18th and 25th, the GNR inspected 60,846 drivers, of which 485 were driving with excess alcohol.

Of these, 279 were arrested for driving with a blood alcohol level equal to or greater than 1.2 g/l (considered a crime). 89 people were also arrested for driving without a license.

Of the 9,220 road traffic offenses detected, the GNR highlights 1,397 for speeding, 206 for excess alcohol, 214 for lack or incorrect use of seat belts and/or child seats, 249 for improper use of a cell phone while driving, 1,186 for lack of mandatory periodic inspection and 365 for lack of mandatory civil liability insurance.
