My Taiko Journey – Shoji Kameda

February 12, 2018 @ 8:00 am - 5:00 pm

Taiko Musician

Join us for a special one-night concert and lecture by Grammy-nominated taiko drumming artist Shoji Kameda. Kameda will give audiences the opportunity to experience the impact, depth, and diversity of taiko as he performs, discusses his musical journey and answers questions from audience members. The event will be held at Three Rivers Community College on Monday, February 12 at 7:00 p.m. in room F-117. This event is free and open to the public and is a part of the Booker T. DeVaughn lecture series.

Musician, composer and producer Shoji Kameda began playing taiko when he was eight years old and has played continuously since. He was selected through a highly competitive process to be an Asian Pacific Performance Exchange fellow and has collaborated with master artists from the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand and United States.

Taiko drumming is a dynamic musical art form that uses powerful rhythms and is practiced around the world with a broad range of Japanese percussion instruments. Its cultural heritage originates in Japan where it has been used as a form of communication throughout history as well as in religious ceremonies and theatrical accompaniment.
