UKRAINIAN drone strikes have knocked out power for “hundreds of thousands” in Moscow, leaving parts of the city dark.
As many as half a million people have reportedly been left without power in the dead of winter thanks to the strikes, Ukrainian officials claim.
Footage shared to social media in the aftermath of the strikes shows entire tower blocks left in darkness.
In some areas of the Russian capital street lamps have been knocked out as well.
Volodymyr Zelensky’s former press secretary, Iuliia Mendel, said: “Total blackout hits Moscow region is reported on social media.
“Over 600,000 people plunged into darkness for more than four hours — no electricity, no mobile signal, total isolation.

The number of Russian residents affected by the blackout remains unverified.
Reports indicate anywhere between 100,000 and 600,000 have been left without electricity.
Mixed reports suggest a substation fire caused the blackouts, though it remains unclear if this was caused by a drone strike.
The Russian military has said it downed more than 100 Ukrainian drones in four hours.
It comes after reports on social media suggested a large swarm of drones was spotted heading for the Russian capital.
Three drones were headed towards Moscow, the Russian military reportedly claimed.
Sergei Sobyanin, Moscow’s mayor, is said to have confirmed that several unmanned aerial vehicles were intercepted.
According to some reports the drone strikes and subsequent blackout have forced airports to suspend operations.
One social media account reports the attack marks the first time parts of Moscow have lost power after a Ukrainian strike.
Another shared video footage of mobile generators being brought into some districts in the Russian capital to restore power.
Video shows large trucks hauling the bulky generators into the darkened sections of the city.
The strike came in the dead of winter with a thick layer of snow covering the frigid Moscow streets.
It comes just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky denied allegations by Russia that Ukraine launched a drone attack on one of President Vladimir Putin’s residences.
The president went on to accuse Moscow of trying to derail peace talks.
