The weather heading into the New Year will be “typically dry” and with temperatures “within normal range for the time of year”, according to a source from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) told Lusa.
Speaking to Lusa, meteorologist Jorge Ponte explained that, although it may still be “a little early for a forecast” for the New Year, “it may still undergo some changes”, however, “the tendency is for the weather to be dry and temperatures to be within normal limits for the time of year”.
These will be values “close to zero, or even slightly below zero in the northeast of Trás-os-Montes and Beira Alta, and between 5 and 10 degrees in the rest of the territory, in relation to the minimum temperatures”, he specified.
“The maxims [serão] naturally a little higher, between 10 and 15 degrees, in most of the territory and lower in the northern and central interior”added the meteorologist.
Today, in terms of temperature, as explained by Jorge Ponte, what is affecting the weather in mainland Portugal “is a depression with an altitude expression that is to the northwest of the continent and is gradually moving south”, transporting “a mass of cold air, which is why temperatures have been low”.
According to the meteorologist, last night [de quinta para sexta-feira] it was the one, until now, “with the lowest temperatures”, remembering that a large part of the continent was already under yellow warning due to the cold weather in force.
“Next night will still be cold [sexta-feira para sábado]therefore the yellow cold weather warning is still in place in the north and central regions, due to low minimum temperatures. However, temperatures will gradually rise,” he said.
Jorge Ponte added that there will be “a small rise, nothing very significant”, but temperatures “will remain within what is normal for the time of year”.
