The Lisbon Metro announced this week that “on Christmas and New Year’s Eve, its network will operate until 1am”. In other words, it extends the service on Christmas Eve, compared to what happened previously, but the same no longer happens on the night when the New Year is welcomed.

“On the 24th and 31st of December, train circulation runs until 01:00 on the 25th of December and 1st of January, respectively, resuming service at 06:30 on those same days”, indicated the company, in statement released on Monday (22).

In this way, the company extends the service on Christmas Eve, as, in previous years, it ended earlier – in 2024, the stations closed at 10pm on Christmas Eve and the stations reopened the following day only at 8:00 am -, as the metro remembers in the note.

But, in the opposite sense, the subway’s operation is not prolonged on the night of New Year’s Eveas happened in 2024, the year in which it was announced that the metro would be open until 3am. In 2025, on New Year’s Eve, anyone using transport will only have the metro until 01:00, the usual time.

That night, it should be noted, the party to welcome 2026 at Terreiro do Paço, promoted by the Lisbon City Council, has entertainment that lasts “until 1am”, as stated, in statementthe Lisbon Equipment and Cultural Entertainment Management Company (EGEAC) on New Year’s Eve in the capital.

According to the metro, the opening hours announced for this year “aim to respond to the mobility needs specific to the festive season, ensuring extended opening hours that facilitate travel associated with Christmas and New Year’s Eve, and a regular and accessible public transport offer adjusted to the usage dynamics of the city of Lisbon on nights marked by specific mobility dynamics”.

The Lisbon Metro made it known, however, that it will monitor the “evolution of demand” throughout this festive season, “making any adjustments that prove necessary, depending on operational, safety and resource availability conditions”.
