Tesla has been contracted by Matrix Renewables, the Spanish renewable energy platform founded by global asset manager TPG, to supply, design and commission a 500 MW/1 GWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in Eccles, Scotland, under a full EPC agreement (“turnkey” contract with full coverage), the parties announced.

The project, Matrix’s first in the United Kingdom, has already met all planning conditions and received authorization to begin construction.

Installed in strategic transmission corridors between Scotland and England, BESS aims to reinforce network flexibility, accelerate the integration of renewables and increase the resilience of the electricity system.

Technical execution includes prior verification by Enertis Applus+, technical advice from GHD and proprietary engineering by Black & Veatch, aiming for high standards throughout the asset’s life cycle.

Sergio Arbeláez, managing director for Europe and Latin America from Matrix Renewables, highlighted that the partnership with Tesla “evidences the ability to carry out storage projects’utility‑scale‘ through robust collaborations.”

Matrix Renewables also indicated its intention to expand its portfolio in the United Kingdom in clean generation, storage and emerging technologies, with a goal of adding up to 3 GW in the coming years.
