The Chiado area, in Lisbon, will be car-free again over the next two weekends to mitigate the effects of the usual concentration of people during this festive season, the capital’s city council revealed this Thursday, December 18th. In addition, there will be free parking in some parks and free shuttles to Baixa.

In a statement, the municipality said that traffic restrictions will occur between 10:00 on Saturday and 23:59 on Sundayto “increase pedestrian safety and allow their free movement”.

Access for residents is guaranteed, as well as loading and unloading between 06:00 and 10:00.

According to the municipality, traffic will be restricted on Rua Garrett, on Rua Nova do Almada from the intersection with Rua de São Nicolau to Rua Garrett (where traffic will be diverted to Rua do Crucifixo) and on Rua Ivens, between the intersection with Rua Capelo and up to Rua Garrett (traffic will be diverted to Rua Capelo and towards Rua Serpa Pinto).

On Rua Serpa Pinto, between the intersection of Rua Capelo and Rua Garrett, traffic will be diverted to the downward direction of Rua Serpa Pinto.

Traffic will also be restricted on Calçada do Sacramento, between Rua Garrett and the intersection with Rua Almirante Pessanha (exit from the Chiado car park will be permitted).

The Lisbon City Council will also once again promote the “Leave the car behind and celebrate Christmas” campaignoffering this Friday and the weekend, as on the 26th, 27th and 28th, free parking in the EMEL parking lots at Campo Grande and Universidade.

From these parks there will be an exclusive and free Carris shuttle with departures every 30 minutes until 9:30 pm from Campo Grande and 10:30 pm from Restauradoreswith stops at Marquês de Pombal, Avenida da Liberdade and Restauradores”, indicates the camera in the note.

On the same days, Parking will also be free in the EMEL parks in Alcântara and Avenida de Pádua“both with direct connection to Baixa via Tram 15E (Alcântara) and Carreira 708 (Avenida de Pádua) with free transport tickets delivered to the parking lot”.

“To take advantage of this free service, simply access these car parks where the EMEL and CARRIS teams will be there to help”, reveals the Lisbon City Council,

The initiative will be further reinforced with the extension of opening hours at Parques Navegante da EMEL da Ameixoeira, Avenida de Pádua, Azinhaga da Cidade Colégio Militar and Telheiras Nascente and Poente until 02:00 for registered members.
