North American authorities continue to search for the person responsible for the shooting at Brown University, in the USA, after the release of a suspect detained as part of the investigation into the shooting that killed two students and injured nine others.
“Sometimes you go in one direction and then you need to regroup and go in another direction, and that’s exactly what happened in the last 24 hours,” said Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha, quoted by US media. “It is fair to say that there are no grounds for considering him a person of interest,” added about the person who was initially detained after the shooting at the higher education institution, located in Providence.
Due to lack of sufficient evidence, Providence Mayor Brett Smiley announced at a press conference on Sunday night the release of the person who was initially considered a suspect in the shooting at Brown University. “We know that this will probably cause new anxiety in our community”, assumed the mayor. He stated, however, that “the state of security” in the community “remains unchanged”.
“We believe they remain safe in our community,” Brett Smiley told reporters. He also said that it is currently unknown whether the person responsible for the shooting has left the State of Rhode Island.
An individual opened fire in the Engineering building on the university campus, at a time when final exams were taking place. More than 40 shots were fired from a 9 mm pistol, a police officer told the Associated Press.
The Providence police even released, on social media, a short video about a “person of interest”, dressed in black, leaving the building where the shooting took place.
