This Friday, December 12, Germany summoned the Russian ambassador, after accusing groups linked to Russia of a cyber attack on air traffic control in 2024. The German government also makes accusations related to an attempt at electoral interference, according to the BBC.
Operations that Germany classified as “hybrid attacks” and which included drone flights near European airports, according to France 24.
“We can now clearly attribute the cyber attack against German Air Security in August 2024 to the hacker collective APT28, also known as Fancy Bear”, said the ministry’s spokesperson under Johann Wadephul, quoted by the international press.
The same official stated, at a press conference, that Germany can “now definitively state that Russia, through the Storm 1516 campaign, sought to influence and destabilize the country’s most recent federal elections.”
The Foreign Ministry spokesperson also announced that Germany intends to carry out “countermeasures to make Russia pay the price for its hybrid actions”, in “close coordination” with European partners.
Without providing details, he also said that Germany supports “new individual sanctions against hybrid actors at European level”.
According to the BBC, Russia has not yet reacted to these accusations of “hybrid” attacks against Germany.
