He Cuban Government has announced the Total suspension of “non-essential” teaching and work activity during this Friday and Saturday due to the serious energy crisis that the island is suffering and after the continuous blackouts that have been recorded on the island in recent weeks.
“Taking into account the energy situation facing the country and with the aim of contributing to the necessary savings in electrical energy consumption To mitigate the effects on the population, it has been decided to suspend teaching and work activities that are not essential under the current conditions for the next 14 and 15 February,” announced the Minister of Labor and Social Security, Marta Elena Feito Cabrera.
“As usual in these cases, basic services to the population are maintained“, he explained in a statement published on social networks in which he stated that “workers who, as a result of this situation, do not attend work will receive protection equivalent to the salary scale of the position they occupy with the provisions of the Labor Code.”
The country has been mired in an energy crisis for years due to the lack of fuel -due to the lack of foreign currency to import it- and due to the frequent breakdowns in its obsolete thermoelectric plantswith decades of exploitation and a chronic investment deficit.
This energy crisis in Cuba has worsened in recent months. In the last quarter of 2024, three national blackouts while several cities have suffered power outages these days, with the capital, Havana, even scheduling service suspensions for several hours.
