O Public reveals this Monday, December 1st, that the reduction of construction VAT to 6% risks violating European rules. The newspaper explains that this Government measure, if approved, “will cover the vast majority of the market” and could violate the European directive on this tax. The reduction in VAT on the construction of housing for sale or rent at “moderate prices” was approved by the Council of Ministers, but still has to go through the Assembly of the Republic.
Already the News Journal highlights that families saved 345 million euros in IMI with discounts from city councils. JN says that the reduction in this tax “has eased the wallet of the Portuguese”, but there are local authorities “profiting more than in previous years”. According to the newspaper, Lisbon was the municipality that obtained the highest revenue from IMI (137 million euros) and Porto comes in fourth place, with 44.
