The world’s richest man Elon Musk told Nikhil Kamath that the work could become optional in the next two decades due to rapid progress in artificial intelligence and robotics. In a podcast with Nikhil Kamath, the Tesla and SpaceX chief predicted that technology will advance so fast that jobs may feel more like side activities than a necessity. Musk opened the conversation with a bold timeline, saying, “My prediction is that in less than 20 years, working will be optional, like a hobby, pretty much.” He said breakthroughs in AI and robotics will push the world to a point where machines can handle almost everything humans need.

Elon Musk’s Big Prediction on Jobs

Explaining the idea further, Musk added, “I think it will turn out to be true that in less than 20 years, maybe. Even as little as… 10 or 15 years. The advancements in AI and robotics will bring us to the point where working is optional in the same way that you can grow your own vegetables in your garden, or you could go to the store and buy vegetables.”

He also offered a slightly quirky take on machine behaviour in the future, saying AI systems may eventually “run out of things to do to make humans happy”.

Money may fade away too, says Elon Musk

In another prediction made earlier at the US-Saudi Investment Forum on November 19, Musk said money itself might lose meaning in an AI-led world. “My guess is, if you go out long enough… then money will stop being relevant at some point in the future,” he said, adding that basic physical limits like electricity and mass will continue to matter.

What he said about India, visas and Starlink

Musk also spoke extensively about India during the podcast. On Indian talent in the US, he said: “I think America has benefitted immensely from talented Indians that have come to America. Asked what advice he would offer young entrepreneurs in India, Musk replied: “I’m a big fan of anyone who wants to build… aim to make more than you take. Be a, you know, a net contributor to society.”

He also revealed a personal detail about his family, sharing that his partner Shivon Zilis is “half-Indian” and that one of their children carries an Indian middle name. “One of my sons with her is, his middle name is Sekhar, after Chandrasekhar,” Musk said.
