Saif al Islam, the son of dictator Muammar Gaddafi overthrown in the 2011 uprisings, is murdered in Libya

Saif al Islam Gaddafi, son of the Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi overthrown in 2011, died this Tuesday in Libya, according to his advisor and head of his political team, Abdullah Otham, on his social networks, without specifying details about the cause of death.

According to the local media The Libya Observer, which cites “reports” whose origin is not specified, Gaddafi was assassinated near the town of Zintan, in the northwest of the country, about 140 kilometers from Tripoli.

Saif, born in 1972, was considered the successor to his father, who was in power for 42 years and was captured and killed after the popular uprisings of 2011.

In 2015, a Libyan court handed down a death sentence in absentia against Saif al-Islam for suppressing peaceful protests during the 2011 revolution that ended his father’s rule.

He has also been provisionally indicted by the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity, a case his lawyers were unable to dismiss.

In 2021, Saif al-Islam registered as a presidential candidate for a December election that they finally failed in the midst of a political stalemate.
