Donnelly Named Senior Member of SPIE

Judy Donnelly, program coordinator of the Laser and Fiber Optic Technology program at Three Rivers Community College, has been named one of the first 20 Senior Members of SPIE, an international optics and photonics society based in Bellingham, Wa. The Senior Member designation is a new program conceived in 2008 that honors members’ significant contributions to the optics and photonics community.

According to SPIE, [The] Senior Member program encompasses a broad group of active members who have shown outstanding leadership in educational outreach, project management, and/or entrepreneurial operations.”

This is the first year the SPIE Board of Directors has made selections for the program.

To be eligible for this distinction, Donnelly met the requirements of having a minimum of five years of continuous regular SPIE membership or active volunteerism. She also had at least 10 years of significant professional experience and achievement in industry or academia.

Other Senior Members hailed from France, South Africa, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and various areas of the United States; they included employees of NASA, the Air Force, and institutions of higher learning.

Donnelly’s career at Three Rivers has spanned 31 years. Her professional memberships include:

• OSA (Optical Society of America), of which she is a member of the Membership and Education Services Committee

• NEFC (New England Fiber Optic Council)

• ATEA (American Technical Educators Association), for which she was a nominee for Teacher of the Year

• NSTA (National Science Teachers Association)

• AAPT (American Association of Physics Teachers)

Donnelly’s council was also instrumental in the conception and design of the new optics lab at the college, which is modeled after those at Boston University.
